Lafayette, Louisiana, is actively pursuing a range of environmental initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for its residents and promoting sustainability. These efforts encompass waste management improvements, community beautification projects, and strategic flood mitigation plans.
Environmental Quality Convenience Center
In July 2025, the Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) commenced construction on the Environmental Quality Convenience Center, a 4-acre facility located at 400 Dugas Road. This center is designed to provide residents with a free, accessible location to drop off household waste, recyclables, construction debris, electronics, and other items not collected curbside. Additionally, it will serve as a year-round hub for environmental programming, including paper shredding and household hazardous waste collection events. Community Beautification Efforts
LCG’s Environmental Quality Division, in collaboration with Keep Lafayette Beautiful, secured a $10,000 Beautification Grant from Keep Louisiana Beautiful and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. This funding supports landscaping projects that highlight local art and native plants, enhancing community pride. Notably, the Cajun Prairie Entryway project will transform a median on Louisiana Avenue with planter boxes wrapped in local art and native landscaping, showcasing Acadiana’s natural beauty. Drainage and Flood Mitigation Initiatives
Recognizing the importance of effective stormwater management, LCG launched a Drainage Community Engagement Series in March 2026. This initiative aims to inform residents about local drainage projects, gather community input, and shape the parish’s long-term Stormwater Plan. In 2025, LCG invested over $22 million in operations, maintenance, and capital projects to improve drainage across the city and parish. These efforts include participation in the Community Rating System to help residents qualify for reduced flood insurance rates and updated floodplain regulations to enhance development standards. LCG encourages residents to participate in environmental stewardship through programs like Adopt-a-Road, where groups can maintain litter-free stretches of road, and the Storm Drain Marking Program, which raises awareness about preventing waste from entering waterways.
